2019 APA President-Elect Candidate Statement - Jean Lau Chin

I have a strong track record on women’s issues.  I have been an active member of Division 35 for the past 30 years as past-president in 2005, Task Force Chair for Asian American Concerns, Division 35 Coordinator to the National Multicultural Summit in 2003, APA Council representative for 2 terms, and Investment Chair for the past 10 years.

During my presidential year, my Women and Leadership initiative convened almost 100 feminist women in forums that led publishing one of the early books on feminist leadership in 2007.  Of my many publications and presentations since, many address women’s leadership and empowering women.  My current research examines the influence of gender and ethnicity on leadership, and is central to the work of my International Leadership Network.  My advocacy and clinical work over several decades has focused on mental health issues for ethnic minorities and Asian American women.  I recently published a chapter on Leadership among Asian women.  I received several awards recognizing my work with women including the Committee on Women in Psychology Award from APA and the Margaret Floy Washburn Award from NYSPA.

My work on policy and program development within APA and other associations often address women’s issues.  On APA council, I ensured that policy issues would address issues affecting women.  For example, I worked as Council Leadership Team Chair to develop a more inclusive process over the concerns that the development of clinical guidelines do not sufficiently include the research or methods relevant to women and ethnic minorities. I also served at the federal level on the advisory committee for Women’s issues for Substance Abuse, Mental Health Services Association (SAMHSA) back in the 1990s to promote services and policies for women and to address bias.  As president of the Division for Women’s Issues of the New York State Psychological Association and now council representative, I continue to address women’s issues via legislative policies, conference programming and advocacy.

My vision of how I would incorporate the mission and values of Division 35 if elected is multifold. My platform of PsychologistsLEAD is about Leadership to Empower all members, Advocate for all of psychology and use psychology to make a Difference. I see the tendency for APA to build siloes in how it does its business—clinical guidelines being one example in which professional practice guidelines are split from clinical guidelines in how we address practice.  I would convene integrative leadership forums to bring together diverse perspectives to address important issues for psychology such as this.  My emphasis on promoting diversity and inclusion and building bridges aligned with the mission and values of Division 35.  I would ensure that all policies coming before us would include how it addresses women’s issues.  I would also urge that we take strong positions to change or create policy on those issues affecting women, e.g.,  reproductive rights, domestic violence, separation of children from families.  The bottom line is that I envision my presidency as promoting leadership for change.
Division 35 has been my home division.  I have given 30 years of my career to actively support and work on women’s issues for the division.  I now ask for your support in giving me a sole endorsement.

Sincerely,

Jean Lau Chin EdD, ABPP
