2018 Candidate Statement: Jean Lau Chin

Division 35 Endorsement of Jean Lau Chin for APA President

Track Record on Behalf of Women’s Issues
As a longstanding and active member of Division 35, I have a long track record on behalf of women’s issues, not only in my work within Division 35, but also through my scholarship, teaching, training, advocacy, and service.  Feminist values are central to how I conceptualize my work and advocate to promote equity and women’s voices.  My scholarship on women’s issues has been extensive.  My chapter on Feminist Curriculum Development was in Norine Johnson’s seminal book in 1997 on Feminist Visions.  When I became president of Division 35 in 2003, I convened more than 35 feminist women and collaborated to produce one of the early books on Feminist Leadership. As a member of Division 35’s Executive Committee for more than 20 years, I have held many roles including the Asian American Women Task Force Chair (now Section V), Coordinator of the 3rd NMCS, Secretary, President, and now Investment Chair.  The length of my service to Division 35 reflects not only my commitment to feminist issues, but also that Division 35 has been my professional home.

Outside Division 35, I have been faculty member of the Leadership Institute for Women in Psychology and the Women of Color Leadership Institute (BraVada Garrett-Akinsanya’s presidential initiative), and taught Psychology of Women at Adelphi University.  I was president of the Division of Women’s Issues for the New York State Psychological Association, Chair of the Women’s Caucus of APA Council, and member of the federal advisory Committee on Women at SAMHSA. I am featured in APA Women’s Office Traveling Exhibit I am Psyched and am one of the Feminist Voices in Alexandra Rutherford’s Heritage Project.  In all these roles, I have been an advocate for women, and professed feminist values of equity and inclusion.

Track record of inclusiveness and fostering the empowerment of women.
My work on diversity and leadership are central to goals of inclusiveness and fostering the empowerment of women, ethnic minorities, and Asian American women in particular.  My leadership development workshops, lectures, and research attempt to identify the barriers faced by women in accessing and exercising leadership, i.e., double binds and stereotypic gender expectations.  This is most notable in my TEDx talk last year on: Why aren’t their more women and diverse leaders? and my Fulbright Award as Distinguished Chair on Global and Diverse Leadership this year.  My research supports the premise that gender makes a difference; women leaders always factor it into how they exercise their leadership while men simply don’t have to think about it.

Electability
You can be assured that I will continue to incorporate Division 35 values in all that I do should I be elected president.  It is embedded in my presidential initiative on Leadership for Change. I believe I am very electable given my many networks, strong reputation for getting things done and being fair.  I have always worked with Division 35 to support many feminist women into leadership roles. I now seek your support to endorse me for APA president as one of your own.  Your endorsement would mean a great deal to me, and would have great influence to help me win.
